The 8V 421 was rated at 405 horsepower, and was cammed to work at very high road speeds. This particular car, weighing 3685 pounds, and equipped with a 3.90:1 positraction axle, is a freeway ride you'll never forget.
For the extra two grand the 421 SD cost over the standard engine, it was probably perceived as an unnecessary expense for the added 50 or so horsepower. In those days you could buy the dual-quad setup from the dealers, install it yourself on top of your 389, and get pretty close to the same performance. "Pretty close" meant times in the low 15's; not too bad for a 2-ton car.
