Originally developed by the German government as an economical form of transportation, the iconic Volkswagen Beetle became the most popular car in the world. It was consistently modified and improved throughout its production, but the basics of the car remained the same. It was inexpensive to run and very reliable. In the 1960s, it was a symbol of the hippie generation.
There have been more Volkswagen Beetles produced than any other car, with over 21 million cars made worldwide. It started with a design submitted by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931. Production began in 1938 and continued until 2003. The last car was produced in Mexico, where they continued to be very popular. It always retained the basic 4 cylinder air-cooled rear mounted engine of the original design.
